What changes your price
- The cleaning method. Additives cost the least. A thermal bake costs the most.
- How clogged it is. Hard ash needs a deeper clean than light soot.
- Filter size. Big truck filters cost more to clean than car filters.
- Taking it off. Some quotes include removing and refitting the filter. Some do not.
- Your area. Prices change a lot from city to city.
- Extra checks. Some shops add a test before and after cleaning.
Three ways to clean a DPF
Suncent Auto splits DPF cleaning into three levels. A cleaner you pour in the fuel tank costs $20 to $100 and only helps light buildup. Air or water cleaning, where the filter is blasted with air or water and cleaners, costs $300 to $500. A thermal bake, where the filter sits in a special oven for 8 to 12 hours, costs $600 to $900. Suncent says the bake is the only method that brings a filter back to over 95 percent of its first flow.
Empire Auto Protect says cleaning works as long as the inside of the filter is not cracked or melted. Only cracked, melted or badly ash filled filters really need to be replaced. A 30 Minute DPF Clean guide says to clean most diesel filters every 100,000 to 150,000 miles.
A clogged filter also costs you at the pump. Suncent Auto says a heavily clogged DPF can raise fuel use by 3 to 5 percent, so waiting to clean it is not free.
Do not remove the filter to skip the cost. Empire Auto Protect says removing a DPF breaks the federal Clean Air Act for any vehicle driven on public roads. - Price a cleaning before you agree to a new DPF. A new one can cost several times more.
- Drive on the highway now and then. Long, hot drives help the filter clean itself.
- Fix the problem that clogged it, like a bad injector, so it does not clog again.
- Use the oil your engine maker calls for. The wrong oil can leave more ash.
- Ask a DPF cleaning shop, not only the dealer.
