What a car diagnostic costs in 2026, by shop and brand
The diagnostic fee is what a shop charges to find out why the light is on. Most charge one hour of labor, and most credit it toward the repair. Pick where you're going for the normal range.

Free code read vs paid diagnostic
AutoZone, O'Reilly and Advance Auto Parts will plug in a scanner and read the trouble code for free. That tells you the symptom. Code P0420, for example, means the catalytic converter is reading low efficiency. It does not tell you whether the converter has failed, an oxygen sensor is lying, or an exhaust leak is fooling the sensor.
The paid diagnostic is the hour a technician spends proving which one it is. That hour is what stops a $100 sensor problem from becoming a $1,500 converter replacement that didn't fix anything. Pay for the diagnosis, then decide on the repair.
Three questions to ask before you book
- What is the diagnostic fee, and does it cover one hour or more?
- Is it credited toward the repair if I have you do the work?
- Will you call me before going past the first hour?

Common questions
How much is a car diagnostic fee?
$50 to $150 at an independent shop, about $100 at chains, $100 to $250 at a mainstream dealer, $150 to $400 at a luxury dealer. One hour of labor is the norm.
Is the fee credited if I get the repair done?
Usually at independents and chains, sometimes at dealers. Ask first.
Can I get a diagnostic for free?
The code read is free at parts stores. The diagnosis that finds the cause is not.
Do I pay under warranty?
Not for a covered fault. Dealers ask you to agree to the fee in case the cause is outside the warranty.
How is a car diagnostic different from an HVAC diagnostic fee?
Same idea, different trade. An HVAC diagnostic fee covers a technician coming to your home and testing the system, $75 to $200. A car diagnostic is at the shop.
