How we calculate this
Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.
What goes into the price
| Independent shop | Commonly $90 to $150 an hour in 2026. |
|---|---|
| Dealership | Commonly $130 to $250 an hour. Luxury and diesel desks sit at the top. |
| National band | AutoLeap's June 2026 summary of AAA and shop data puts most of the country at $120 to $159 an hour. |
| State band | High-cost metros in California, New York and Washington often clear $160. Lower-cost states cluster near $120 or under. |
| How the quote is built | Shops multiply a book time by the posted rate. A 1.5-hour pad job at $140 is $210 of labor before parts. The clock is the book, not the minutes the tech actually spent. |
| Diagnostic hour | The first hour that finds the fault is often this same rate. That is the fee on the car diagnostic pages. |
The detail a quote hides
The labor rate is the multiplier on every line of the quote. Two shops can use the same book time and still differ by $80 an hour. Ask for the posted rate and the book hours as two numbers. Then the parts line is the only thing left to compare.
What most shops charge in 2026
AAA reports on the 2025 PartsTech study of US repair shops. Almost half of shops price labor between $120 and $159 an hour.
A 2026 shop pricing guide puts the independent shop benchmark near $140 an hour. Dealers are often higher.
Rates run from under $100 an hour in some rural areas to over $200 in some big cities.
A worked example: book hours, not clock hours
Most shops charge by book time. A labor guide says how long a job should take, and you pay for that time even if the mechanic is faster.
Say the guide lists a job at 2.5 hours and the shop charges $140 an hour. The labor line is $350, even if the work takes 1.5 hours.
If the job takes longer than the guide says, you usually still pay the book time. Ask for the labor hours and the rate on the written quote.
Parts, shop supplies and a diagnostic fee are billed on top. Ask if the diagnostic fee comes off the bill if you have the shop do the repair.

Common questions
What is the average mechanic labor rate in 2026?
Most independents fall in $90 to $150. Dealers $130 to $250. National summaries sit near $120 to $159.
Why is the dealer higher?
Factory tools, more overhead and brand parts. On a warranty job you are not paying that rate.
Is a $200 hourly rate a scam?
Not at a luxury or coastal dealer. It is high for an independent in a small town.
Does a lower rate mean a cheaper bill?
Only if the book hours match. A cheap rate with extra hours can beat a high rate with tight book time.
