What changes your price
- Office or surgery center. An in-office vasectomy on MDsave costs $487 to $1,100. The same job at an outpatient surgery center in Kansas City is $3,438, because a facility adds its own fees.
- What the price includes. Planned Parenthood of Michigan's $800 includes the procedure, pain management, the semen test and follow up visits. Arizona's patients must do the lab work at an outside lab.
- The consult. Southwestern Oregon charges $65 for the consult on top of the $700 procedure. Michigan charges $100 but takes it off if you have the vasectomy there.
- Your insurance. Many plans cover some or all of it. Planned Parenthood notes the federal rule that makes birth control free does not include vasectomies, so check your plan.
- Income. Many Planned Parenthood centers and other clinics charge less based on income.
What happens, and why you need a follow up test
Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC uses only the no-scalpel method. A small hole is made in the skin after a local numbing shot, with no stitches. It says the visit takes about an hour, and most people can drive home and go back to a desk job the next day.
A vasectomy does not work right away. Planned Parenthood Great Northwest says you must use other birth control until a test shows no sperm, about 3 months. That semen test is why a price that includes it, like Michigan's, can be better value than a lower price that does not.
A vasectomy is meant to be permanent. On MDsave, a reversal costs $4,475 to $10,625, far more than the vasectomy itself.
