Window replacement costs $3,437 to $11,839 per project in 2026
That is Angi's range from 13,122 verified jobs, with an average of $7,349. One window averages about $750 installed. A three bedroom home with 10 to 12 windows usually pays $7,000 to $9,000 for standard double hung vinyl. Wood, fiberglass and big bay windows push it higher.

Cost by number of windows and material
| One window, installed | About $750 on average. Fixr puts most at $450 to $1,200, and the full range at $300 to $3,000. |
|---|---|
| 6 to 8 windows | $4,500 to $6,000. |
| 8 to 12 windows | $6,000 to $9,000. |
| 12 to 16 windows | $9,000 to $12,000. |
| 20 to 24 windows | $15,000 to $18,000. |
| Vinyl | $800 to $1,600 per window installed, according to Pella. Inch Calculator lists $400 to $800. |
| Fiberglass or wood | $1,100 to $2,200 or more per window installed, according to Pella. |
| Glass only, frame kept | $280 to $350 per window. |
| Bay window | $900 to $7,100. |
What pushes a quote up
| Insert or full frame | An insert window slides into the old frame. Full frame replacement strips to the rough opening and costs more in trim and repairs. |
|---|---|
| Material | Vinyl is the low end. Fiberglass and wood cost about 40 percent more per window in Pella's numbers. |
| Size and style | Casement, bay and custom shapes cost more than standard double hung. |
| How many at once | Angi and Fixr both say the price per window drops when you replace the whole house in one job. |
| Access | Second floor and hard to reach windows take longer to fit. |
Window replacement cost by region
| Lower cost states | $2,700 to $9,500. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas. |
|---|---|
| Average cost states | $3,437 to $11,839. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities. |
| Higher cost states | $4,500 to $15,400. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC. |
These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Cold states lean toward triple pane and low E glass, which lifts the average there.
Why the same window costs $565 on one site and $1,600 on another
Inch Calculator says the average window costs $565. Angi says $750. Fixr says $800. Pella, which makes windows, says $800 to $1,600 for vinyl. Thompson Creek, a big window installer, says $750 to $1,600 or more. Each one is honest about what it counts.
The low numbers include many small jobs: a glass swap, a basement window, a stock insert fitted by a handyman. The high numbers come from brands that measure, build to size and send their own crews, with a long warranty. That service is real, and so is the price gap. Before you compare two quotes, ask each one the same three things: insert or full frame, which glass package, and who does the install.
The tax credit is gone
NerdWallet notes the federal credit of up to $600 for efficient windows ran through 2025. A salesperson who still quotes it as a discount on a 2026 job is using an old number. Check your utility for local rebates instead.
Is it worth it
NerdWallet cites the Department of Energy: windows account for 25 to 30 percent of heating and cooling energy use, and Energy Star windows can cut bills about 13 percent over single pane. Inch Calculator cites a 68.5 percent return at resale for new vinyl windows from the Cost vs. Value report.
Why this costs more in 2026
Vinyl frames are made from PVC, a plastic made from oil and gas, and every window ships by truck. Glass is also energy hungry to make.
Fuel is the common thread. AAA's national average for diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on September 11, 2026, up from about $3.70 a year earlier (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Every truck roll and every delivery carries that. Materials moved too. Associated Builders and Contractors reported construction input prices up 4.8 percent in a year as of March 2026, the largest annual gain since January 2023, and the Associated General Contractors said diesel jumped 37.8 percent in one month, the largest one month rise since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026). Some suppliers added freight surcharges this year. Ask how long your quote is good for.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Divide by the number of windows. $450 to $1,200 each is normal. $2,000 each needs a reason.
- Ask insert or full frame. It is the biggest hidden difference between quotes.
- Get the glass spec in writing. Double or triple pane, low E coating, gas fill.
- Watch for a same day price. A discount that lasts only until the salesperson leaves is a sales tactic.
- Read the labor warranty. The frame warranty and the install warranty are often different lengths.
Ways to pay less
- Do the whole house in one job. The price per window drops.
- Choose vinyl for bedrooms and back rooms. Save wood or fiberglass for the front of the house.
- Replace only the worst windows first. Rotted frames and failed seals come first.
- Get three quotes, one from a local installer. National brands are rarely the cheapest.
