Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.
Rates by who you hire
| Apprentice or handyman plumber | $45 to $75 |
|---|---|
| Journeyman plumber | $80 to $130 |
| Master plumber | $100 to $200 |
| Emergency or after hours (per hour) | $150 to $300 |
What to know before you book
| Minimum charge | Most plumbers bill at least one hour, and add a $75 to $250 service call fee on top. A ten minute fix still costs an hour plus the fee. |
|---|---|
| Flat rate vs hourly | Common jobs like drain clearing ($75 to $250) or a faucet swap ($120 to $300) are usually quoted flat. Hourly is for open ended work like leak hunting. |
| Emergency plumber cost | Nights, weekends and holidays run 1.5 to 3 times the daytime rate, often with a $100 to $350 surcharge. A weekend burst pipe call is regularly $300 to $500 before parts. |
| Drain cleaning cost | A simple clog is $100 to $250. Main sewer line cleaning with a camera runs $250 to $800. |
| Big city premium | Rates run 20 to 30 percent higher in large coastal metros. |
| What is included | Labor only. Parts, permits and disposal are billed separately. |
Why it costs what it costs
A plumber's hourly rate has to cover the truck, insurance, licensing, tools and the hours spent driving between jobs, not just the minutes on your pipe. That is why an hour of plumbing costs more than an hour of the plumber's wage, and why most add a trip fee as well.
Why this costs more in 2026
Plumbing vans are heavy with pipe and parts, and PVC and PEX pipe are plastics made from oil and gas.
Fuel is the common thread. AAA's national average for diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on September 11, 2026, up from about $3.70 a year earlier (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Materials moved too. Associated Builders and Contractors reported construction input prices up 4.8 percent in a year as of March 2026, the largest annual gain since January 2023, and the Associated General Contractors said diesel jumped 37.8 percent in one month, the largest one month rise since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026).
