What the price includes
The price usually covers placing the sticky pads, the test that takes about 10 minutes, and a printout. A doctor then reads it. Some places add an office visit fee, a separate fee to read the result, or a charge if you need a stress test or a longer heart monitor. It does not include tax or extras the provider adds on the day.
Does insurance cover it
Most health plans cover an EKG when a doctor orders it for a medical reason, such as chest pain or a heart rhythm problem. CostHelper says insured patients often pay a $30 to $100 copay. One example it gives is Harvard Pilgrim, which charges members $32 to $54 for the test and read. Some plans do not cover an EKG done only as a routine screening for a healthy person. Ask your doctor why the test is needed and call your plan to check the billing code.
When a doctor orders it
A doctor may order an EKG if you have chest pain, a racing or skipping heartbeat, dizziness, short breath, or fainting. It may also be used before surgery or to check a heart drug. The test records the heart's electric signals through sticky pads on your chest, arms and legs. It does not hurt and takes only a few minutes. Ask what the doctor hopes to learn and what happens if the result is normal.
How to judge your quote
- Ask if the price includes the doctor's read of the result.
- Ask if there is a separate office visit fee.
- Ask for the cash price before the test, in writing if you can.
- Ask if a clinic or primary care office can do it for less than a hospital.
- Compare the total with the range above: $44 to $299 per test for most people in 2026.
Ways to pay less
- Ask your primary care office for the cash price. Sidecar Health data shows cash prices of $44 to $63 for a routine EKG with a report.
- Compare MDsave prices. MDsave lists $54 to $197 for an EKG and an average of $113 on its site.
- Skip the ER for a planned test. CostHelper says hospital bills can run $500 to $3,000, far above clinic prices.
- Ask if the quote includes the visit fee and the doctor's read. Mira says urgent care often bills both.
- Call two urgent care centers. Mira lists $170 at GoHealth and $299 at Patient First for the same test.
