The four levels of dental sedation
Pearl lists four levels. Laughing gas keeps you awake but relaxed and wears off in minutes. A sedation pill before the visit calms moderate anxiety. IV sedation puts you in a twilight state, often with little memory of the visit. General anesthesia puts you fully to sleep and needs an anesthesia provider.
Sedation is billed separately from the work itself, so ask for one total. After anything deeper than laughing gas you need a driver home. Sedation is most common for wisdom teeth removal, implants and long visits.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask which level and why.
- Ask who gives it and their training.
- Ask for one total with the dental work.
- Ask how it is billed by time.
- Tell them every medicine you take.
Ways to pay less
- Try laughing gas first for mild nerves.
- Group treatments into one sedated visit.
- Ask your insurer about medical need.
- Compare an oral surgeon's quote.
