What pushes the price up
| What | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Type of provider | Talk to Mira lists a counselor at $150, a psychologist at $250, and a psychotherapist at $150 to $300 for one session. |
| City | Talk to Mira says rates can reach $250 an hour in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, and smaller towns often cost less. |
| Session length | SingleCare says most visits last 45 to 50 minutes. A longer visit usually costs more, so check the length before you book. |
| Online or in person | GoodRx Care online visits start at $49, which is well below the $100 to $200 GoodRx lists for most in-person hours. |
| Clinic and training | Talk to Mira's list of clinics shows one session from $120 to $350, so two offices in the same city can differ a lot. |
What the price includes
The price is for one therapy visit, often 45 to 50 minutes. Some therapists charge the same for a first intake visit and others charge more, so ask. Extra costs can include late cancel fees, longer visits, and reports or letters. Medicine from a psychiatrist is billed apart from the visit. It does not include tax or extras the provider adds on the day.
Does insurance cover it
Many health plans pay for part of therapy, but often only if the therapist is in your plan's network. Without insurance, you pay the full price at each visit. If you do have a plan, call the number on your card and ask three things. Is therapy covered? What is my copay or deductible? Is my therapist in network? Some therapists will give you a receipt that you can send to your plan to ask for money back. Paying cash can still make sense if you want more privacy or a therapist outside your network.
When a doctor orders it
Most people start therapy on their own. A doctor may also suggest it after a visit. Common reasons are long stress, low mood, worry, grief, or sleep trouble that does not get better. Call sooner if you feel unsafe. In the US you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
How to judge your quote
- Ask the price per session and how many minutes it covers.
- Ask if the first intake visit costs the same.
- Ask about the fee for late or missed visits.
- Compare the rate to $100 to $250, the usual range on GoodRx and SingleCare.
- Compare the total with the range above: $70 to $350 per session for most people in 2026.
Ways to pay less
- Try Open Path Collective. GoodRx says sessions cost $40 to $70 after a one time $65 membership fee, for people who qualify.
- Ask your therapist if they have a sliding scale. Many lower the price when your income is lower, and it costs nothing to ask.
- Look at online therapy. GoodRx Care online appointments start at $49, which can cost much less than an office visit.
- Ask about a community clinic or a training clinic, where students work under a licensed therapist and fees are often lower.
- Ask your job if it has an employee assistance program. Many give a few free visits. Call first to check what it covers.
