Labor is the biggest part of the bill. The Septic Guide says labor makes up 60 percent or more of the total, because the crew has to dig out the old field and build a new one. What changes your price
- Your soil. Clay soil drains slowly, so it needs a much bigger field than sandy soil.
- The type of system. A standard field costs the least. A mound or drip system costs the most.
- The size of your home. More bedrooms means more water, so the field must be bigger.
- Your state rules. Some states need an engineer and extra permits, which add cost.
- Access. Tight yards, trees and rocks make digging slower.
- Old field removal. Taking out the old field adds $500 to $2,000.
Why your soil sets the price
Before a new field goes in, the county usually wants a new perc test. This test checks how fast water soaks into the soil. The Septic Guide says the soil in the new spot, not your budget, decides which system you are allowed to build.
SepticTankHub says clay soil can need 3 to 5 times more field area than sandy soil. More field means more digging, more gravel and more pipe. That is why a 3 bedroom home in the Midwest with good soil often pays $9,000 to $12,000, while the same home in rocky New England ground can pay $15,000 to $22,000.
Where you live matters too. SepticTankHub gives the example of a field that costs about $9,000 in Ohio costing $13,000 to $15,000 in Connecticut. In New Jersey, state rules that require an engineer can add $2,000 to $4,000 before any digging starts. Inland Georgia and Alabama are often the cheapest, at about $6,000 to $10,000. - Ask what type of system the quote is for, and why.
- Ask how many feet of trench the field will have.

- Ask your county about repair loans or grants for failing septic systems.
