Most homes have 100 to 200 feet of gutter. HomeGuide says a good rule is that gutter length is about one tenth of the home's square feet. So a 1,500 square foot home has about 150 feet of gutter. What changes your price
- Gutter length. More feet of gutter means more material and more labor.
- Stories. Two and three story homes need more ladder work and safety gear, which raises labor.
- Roof shape. Many corners, valleys and downspouts add time.
- Fascia repair. LeafGuard fixes to the fascia board. Rotten fascia must be fixed first, at about $5 to $12 per foot.
- Trees. Branches over the roof may need trimming, at about $400 to $900 per tree.
- Your area. Each LeafGuard dealer sets its own prices, and labor costs differ by city.
Why LeafGuard costs more than a gutter guard
Most gutter guards are a screen or cover that sits on your old gutters. LeafGuard is different. HomeGuide explains that it is an all in one system: the old gutters come off, and a new seamless gutter with a built in hood goes up. That is why the price is closer to new gutters plus a guard than to a guard alone.
The hood uses a curved top. Water follows the curve into the gutter, and leaves slide off the edge. HomeGuide says LeafGuard comes with a lifetime clog free guarantee and a paint finish that is guaranteed not to crack, chip, peel or rust.
The This Old House survey found many customers had 100 to 150 feet of gutter. Customers with 200 feet or more reported prices over $6,000. HomeBuddy says LeafGuard does not remove all cleaning, so ask what the guarantee covers. LeafGuard or a gutter guard on your old gutters

How to judge the price you are quoted
- Ask for the total feet of gutter and the price per foot.
- Ask if old gutter removal, fascia repair and downspouts are included.
- Ask for the guarantee in writing, and what it covers.
- Compare with $20 to $70 per foot, the usual installed range.
Ways to pay less
- Get at least one other quote. A regular seamless gutter with a guard often costs less.
- Ask if the dealer has a seasonal discount. Many do, but do not sign on the day of the visit.
- If your gutters are in good shape, ask if you only need a guard, not new gutters.
- Fix small fascia problems yourself before the visit if you can do it safely.
