Ask what is included before you compare
Two tree quotes can differ by hundreds of dollars and cover different jobs. Some include cutting the tree, grinding the stump, chipping the branches and hauling the wood. Others cut the tree and leave the logs. Ask each company for the same list: cut, stump, chip, haul, and cleanup.
Also ask for proof of insurance. Tree work is one of the most dangerous trades. If an uninsured crew drops a limb on your roof or someone is hurt on your property, you can end up paying.
Storm damage
If a storm drops a tree on your house, your homeowners insurance usually covers removal from the structure. A tree that falls in the yard without hitting anything often is not covered. Call your insurer before the crew starts.

Quotes are being held open for shorter periods this year, so ask for the expiry date in writing.

- Check permits. Some cities require one for large trees.
