How much does a normal vet visit cost?

A regular daytime visit costs far less. Pawlicy Advisor puts a basic exam at $50 to $150, and says AVMA data shows owners spend about $214 on an average routine dog visit and $138 for a cat. Urgent care clinics sit in between.

If your pet is stable, call your regular vet first. A same day sick visit there costs much less than an ER.

Ask for the estimate first

ER vets give a written estimate before treatment. Ask for a low and high number, and ask what can wait until your regular vet opens.

This page is price information, not veterinary advice. If your pet may be in danger, go to the ER.

How to judge the quote in your hand

Ways to pay less

Before you decide

Is it an emergency?

Trouble breathing, a swollen hard belly, eating something toxic, heavy bleeding, seizures, or not being able to pee are reasons to go now. For smaller problems, an urgent care clinic or your regular vet's same day slot usually costs far less.

Pet insurance only helps for problems that start after the policy begins, and most plans have a waiting period. Buying it after an emergency will not cover that visit.
