What the price includes
Standard personal use is free: sending, receiving, holding a balance and transferring to your bank in 1 to 3 days. Fees only apply to credit card funding, instant transfers, business and goods and services payments, and some card features. It does not include tax or extras the provider adds on the day.
Who charges this and how it is billed
Venmo is run by PayPal. It takes its fee out of the money, so you do not get a separate bill. The sender pays the credit card fee on top of the amount sent. For an instant transfer, the fee is taken out of the money you move to your bank. Sellers on a business profile pay a fee on each payment they receive, and Venmo takes it before the money lands. Standard bank transfers take 1 to 3 business days and have no fee. Check the fee screen in the app before you confirm any payment.
How to judge your quote
- Fund your payment with a bank account or debit card to skip the credit card fee.
- Use the standard bank transfer if you can wait. It costs nothing.
- Check the instant transfer fee before you tap. It is 1.75 percent with a $0.25 minimum.
- If you sell, compare the seller fee of 1.9 percent plus $0.10 to other options.
- Compare the fee with the rates above before you pay.
Ways to pay less
- Link a bank account or debit card, not a credit card. That alone removes the 3 percent fee.
- Plan cash flow a day ahead and use the free standard transfer. Instant costs $17.50 on $1,000.
- If you sell often, compare the 1.9 percent plus $0.10 business fee to Cash App's 2.75 percent and PayPal's rates.
- Ask friends not to tag personal payments as goods and services. It costs you 2.99 percent and is not refundable.
