A car paint job costs $300 to $10,000 in 2026

AAA puts a basic paint job at $300 to $1,000, a mid grade job at $1,000 to $4,500 and a high end job at $5,000 to $20,000. The difference is prep. A cheap job scuffs and sprays. A good one sands, fixes dents, primes and adds clear coat. Doing it yourself costs about $100 to $1,000 in supplies.

These rows are our estimate. Body shop labor follows local living costs, and emissions rules on paint booths add cost in some states.

What a $500 paint job gets you, and when a wrap makes more sense

AAA's guide explains the low end plainly. A basic job is a single coat of basic paint with minimal preparation and no finish, and areas you do not see, such as under the hood or inside the door frames, keep their original color. It can freshen an old car you plan to sell. It will not look or last like the factory finish.

A mid grade job at $1,000 to $4,500 is where most owners should look. It adds real prep, better paint and several coats. High end work at $5,000 to $20,000 strips the car to bare metal and is meant for restorations and show cars.

Paint or wrap

If you want a new color and the paint underneath is sound, a vinyl wrap is worth pricing. A full wrap on a typical car runs about $3,000 to $4,500 at a good shop, and it can be peeled off later. If the paint is peeling, rusting or dented, a wrap will show every flaw, and paint is the right fix. See our car wrap cost page.

Why this costs more in 2026

Automotive paint and clear coat are petroleum based, and the shop labor to prep a car is priced at this year's rates.

Fuel is the common thread. AAA's national average for diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on September 11, 2026, up from about $3.70 a year earlier (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Every truck roll and every delivery carries that. Some suppliers added freight surcharges this year. Ask how long your quote is good for.
