The click when you turn, and when a boot is enough
A worn outer CV joint usually clicks or pops when you turn at low speed, for example in a parking lot. The joint sits inside a rubber boot filled with grease. When the boot tears, grease flies out, dirt gets in and the joint wears fast.
If a shop spots a torn boot early, before any clicking, a boot kit can save the joint. Once it clicks, most shops replace the whole axle, because a complete remanufactured or aftermarket axle often costs little more than a boot kit plus labor. Check the boots whenever the car is on a lift for an oil change or tires.
Do not wait too long
J.D. Power warns that ignoring a worn CV axle can lead to a breakdown or worse. A clicking axle can keep working for a while, but a joint that fails at speed can leave the car unable to drive.
Why this costs more in 2026
Axles are heavy steel parts, and freight and shop labor both cost more this year.
The short version is oil. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026. A year earlier it was about $3.70 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). That lands in trip charges, deliveries and anything made from petroleum. Quotes are being held open for shorter periods this year, so ask for the expiry date in writing.
