When plugs are due, and why a V6 costs double
J.D. Power gives the usual intervals: about 30,000 to 40,000 miles for standard plugs, about 60,000 for platinum tipped plugs, and 100,000 to 120,000 for iridium. Most modern cars come with iridium, so many owners change plugs only once or twice in the car's life. Your owner's manual has the exact number.
On a four cylinder engine the plugs sit on top and come out in minutes. On many V6 engines the rear three plugs sit under the intake manifold, so the shop has to take the top of the engine apart. That is why the same job can cost $150 on one car and $500 on another.
Replace them all at once
J.D. Power advises replacing all the plugs together so they wear evenly. If the engine is misfiring, ask whether a coil or wire is at fault too, before you pay for plugs alone.
Why this costs more in 2026
Plug work is mostly labor at this year's shop rates, and parts ship by truck.
The short version is oil. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026. A year earlier it was about $3.70 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). That lands in trip charges, deliveries and anything made from petroleum. Quotes are being held open for shorter periods this year, so ask for the expiry date in writing.
