Reviews put a straight Acorn stairlift at about $2,500 to $5,500 with installation, and curved or outdoor models at about $10,000 to $15,000. Acorn says it does not offer financing, and payment is due at installation.

What changes your price
- Straight or curved. Acorn says the curved 180 is its most expensive model because the rail is shaped to your stairs.
- Turns and landings. Acorn says more turns mean more changes to the rail, which raises the price.
- Indoor or outdoor. Acorn says the outdoor model usually costs a bit more.
- Length of the stairs. Acorn uses the number of steps to design the rail.
Check that it fits before you pay
Acorn lists some limits on its own site. The straight and outdoor models carry up to 280 pounds, and the curved model up to 265 pounds. Stairs need to be at least 26 inches wide for straight models and 27.5 inches for curved. The rider needs to be able to move from a chair to the seat, alone or with help.
Installation is quick. Acorn says a straight stairlift usually takes about an hour to fit, and curved ones take longer. Retirement Living says Acorn's FastTrack rail system lets many curved stairlifts be fitted days after ordering, instead of weeks.
Plan how you will pay. Acorn says it does not offer financing, and payment is due at installation. Two stairlifts can be fitted in one home if you have two staircases. Why curved stairs cost so much more
A straight stairlift uses a standard rail. A curved one needs a rail shaped to every turn and landing, and Acorn says each extra turn means more changes to the rail. That is why curved lifts often cost two to three times as much as straight ones.
Acorn builds curved rails from modular pieces it calls FastTrack, which Retirement Living says lets many curved lifts be fitted within days. The outdoor model adds a weather cover and stops on its own if something falls on the track. Acorn has been making stairlifts since 1992, and says it has served more than 600,000 customers in 80 countries.
How to judge the price you are quoted
- Ask what the price includes: the lift, the rail, installation and warranty.
- Ask how long the warranty lasts and what service visits cost.
- Get a second quote from another stairlift company for the same stairs.
- Compare with $2,500 to $5,500 for straight stairs.
Ways to pay less
- Get at least two quotes. Stairlift prices vary a lot between companies.
- Ask about a reconditioned lift if you only need it for a short time.
- Ask your local area agency on aging about help paying for home changes.
- Keep the rail simple. Fewer turns mean a lower price.
