What pushes a quote up

The cheapest heating upgrade this winter
NEADA projects the average home will spend $1,030 on heat this winter, and homes on heating oil will pay about 31 percent more than last year. A new furnace costs $2,800 to $7,500. Attic insulation costs $1,700 to $2,500. For most homes it is the first dollar to spend, because heat rises and the attic floor is the biggest surface it escapes through.
One 2026 insulation guide quotes the Department of Energy estimate of 15 to 25 percent energy savings from proper insulation plus air sealing. On a $1,030 heating bill that is $150 to $260 a winter, and more in an oil heated home in the Northeast, where NEADA puts the average bill at $1,449.
Air seal first
Insulation slows heat. It does not stop air. Gaps around recessed lights, plumbing stacks, the chimney chase and the attic hatch leak warm air straight through a foot of fiberglass. A good quote lists air sealing as a line. If it does not, ask.
Doing it yourself
Blown in attic insulation is one of the few big energy jobs a careful owner can do. One contractor guide puts DIY materials for a standard attic at $700 to $900, and home improvement stores rent the blowing machine. Wear a respirator, stay on the joists, and keep insulation away from old recessed lights that are not rated for contact.
Why this costs more in 2026
Spray foam is made from petroleum chemicals, and every bag of fiberglass or cellulose rides a truck. Heating oil up about 31 percent this winter is also the reason many people are asking for this quote now.
Fuel is the common thread. AAA's national average for diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on September 11, 2026, up from about $3.70 a year earlier (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Every truck roll and every delivery carries that. Materials moved too. Associated Builders and Contractors reported construction input prices up 4.8 percent in a year as of March 2026, the largest annual gain since January 2023, and the Associated General Contractors said diesel jumped 37.8 percent in one month, the largest one month rise since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026). Some suppliers added freight surcharges this year. Ask how long your quote is good for.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask for the R-value, not the inches. The quote should say what R-value you will end up with.
- Check for air sealing. It should be its own line with a price.
- Ask about baffles. Soffit vents must stay open or the roof deck can rot.
- Divide by your square feet. $1 to $3 is normal for blown in. Over $4 needs a reason such as removal.
- Ask what happens to the old insulation. Removal is $1 to $2 per square foot and is often left out.
Ways to pay less
- Top up, do not tear out. If the old insulation is dry and clean, blow over it.
- Choose blown in for an open attic floor. It costs 40 to 70 percent less than spray foam for the same R-value.
- Check your utility. Many gas and electric companies pay rebates for attic insulation.
- Do it before the cold. Crews are cheaper and faster before the first freeze.
