For once the big guides agree. ConsumerAffairs says $5,750. HomeAdvisor says $5,883. Angi says $5,910. A September 2026 home warranty guide says $6,100. This Old House gives a range of $4,500 to $10,000. If your quote for a like for like gas boiler swap is between $4,000 and $8,500, it is normal.
The spread comes from what sits around the boiler. HomeGuide lists the extras: a chimney liner at $1,500 to $4,000, a gas line at $15 to $50 per foot, removing an old fuel tank at $400 to $3,400, and a new oil tank at $1,200 to $4,600. One of those can add half the price of the boiler.
Oil boiler owners this winter

Boilers last 15 to 20 years or more. One 2026 guide gives three signs that replacement beats repair: the boiler is past 15 years, the repair quote is $1,500 or more, or efficiency has fallen below 80 percent. A normal boiler repair is $200 to $600.
Why this costs more in 2026
A boiler is cast iron or stainless steel and copper pipe, and oil boiler owners are facing a winter where NEADA expects bills about 31 percent higher. That is pushing both quotes and demand.
The short version is oil. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026. A year earlier it was about $3.70 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). That lands in trip charges, deliveries and anything made from petroleum. In March 2026, construction input prices were up 4.8 percent on the year, the biggest annual gain since January 2023, according to Associated Builders and Contractors, and the Associated General Contractors measured a 37.8 percent one month jump in diesel, the largest since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026). Quotes are being held open for shorter periods this year, so ask for the expiry date in writing.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Check it is sized by heat loss. Matching the old boiler's label repeats an old mistake.
- Look for venting and the liner. Ask how the new boiler vents and whether the chimney needs a liner.
- Ask what near boiler parts are included. Expansion tank, circulators, valves and controls.
- Ask who pulls the permit. Gas and oil work needs one nearly everywhere.
- Compare fuel options. If gas is in the street, ask for a gas price next to the oil price.
Ways to pay less
- Replace in spring or summer. Heating crews are slow and you are not without heat.
- Keep the fuel and the venting if they are sound. A like for like swap skips the liner and the lines.
- Ask your gas utility about rebates. High efficiency boilers often qualify.
- Service it every year. A clean, tuned boiler lasts years longer, and oil boilers need it most.
