What changes your price
- Size. JBN Patio Covers says a wider or deeper cover needs longer spans, bigger beams, more posts or bigger footings.
- Roof style. JBN says a simple shed style roof usually costs less than a gable or solid roof.
- Material. This Old House says roof material for a patio runs $6 to $15 a square foot for vinyl and $16 to $38 for wood.
- Attached or freestanding. Fixr says a freestanding pergola needs four legs and an attached one needs two, so freestanding can cost more.
- Site work. Landscapio says an attached cover may need flashing and a ledger attachment.
- Your area. This Old House says a contractor in Phoenix might charge $15 a square foot for a standard pergola, and one in Boston $25.
Cover only, or patio and cover
Fixr says a covered patio averages $14 to $87 a square foot, and most fall between $25 and $40. Fixr puts the low end at $700 for a 6 by 10 gravel patio with a sailcloth cover, and the high end at $24,000 for an 18 by 24 flagstone patio with a gable roof.
Angi, through Western Timber Frame, puts the average patio cover at $8,500, with most installs between $4,500 and $12,000. HomeGuide prices a 10 by 20 covered patio, patio included, at $10,000 to $22,500. This Old House, through the same page, says adding a solid roof over a patio averages about $21,000, with a common range of $14,000 to $31,000.
Kits cost less. Valley Patios says Alumawood and Weatherwood kits run $12.77 to $18.04 a square foot for standard designs and $18.77 to $27.04 for insulated ones. It says premium 4K aluminum covers run $40 to $60 a square foot.
