What changes your price
- System type. Electric costs less to install. Hydronic costs more up front. Bankrate says electric runs about one third to one half the cost of hydronic.
- Surface. Willow Home says heated concrete is $13 to $28 a square foot, asphalt $12 to $27 and pavers $19 to $50.
- Coverage. HomeGuide says heating only the tire tracks lowers install and running costs.
- New or existing driveway. Hydronic needs a new driveway. Electric can go under or into an existing one.
- Size and controls. Sensors and smart controls add cost.
- Site work. Removing an old driveway and drainage add to the bill.
Electric or hydronic
HomeGuide says hydronic systems mean removing the old driveway, laying insulation and tubing, and paving new concrete or asphalt. Electric systems can go in an existing driveway, but HomeGuide says that may void the warranty and cost more to run. It also says installation takes 5 days to 3 weeks, and that with asphalt the contractor must protect hydronic tubing from the hot asphalt.
Willow Home says hydronic costs more up front but can be cheaper to run for larger areas.
WarmlyYours says electric systems use about 50 watts per square foot. It puts the cost of one storm at about $30 for a 400 square foot, full coverage driveway at $0.17 a kilowatt hour, and puts winter running costs at $100 to $300. HomeGuide says $120 to $600 a year. Systems turn on when sensors detect snow or freezing.
