Plan for two zones even if you buy one
A multi zone outdoor unit can feed several indoor heads. A single zone unit feeds one. If you buy a single zone system now and want a second room later, you may need a new outdoor unit and pay for it twice. One installer estimates that planning for two zones up front saves about $1,200 to $2,000 compared with adding one later.
The other side: past three heads, one 2026 guide says separate systems or a ducted system often compete on price. At five heads, get a quote for ducted central air or a ducted heat pump too.
The inspection item that fails most
An electrical supply guide notes that a disconnect switch within sight of the outdoor unit, required by the electrical code, is the item most often failed at inspection. Ask your installer if the disconnect and a dedicated circuit are in the price.
