An oil to gas conversion costs $3,800 to $13,000 in 2026
The average is about $8,500. A simple swap where gas is already at the house is near $3,800. A high efficiency system that needs a new gas line reaches $13,000, and HomeGuide puts complex jobs at up to $20,000. Going to a heat pump instead runs $5,000 to $15,000 in cost guides and about $15,400 in real quotes.

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Nearly all of these jobs are in the Northeast, where about three quarters of oil heated homes are.
Does switching pay this winter
NEADA projects heating oil bills up 31.3 percent this winter and natural gas bills up 5.8 percent. Since the winter of 2021 to 2022, NEADA says oil heating costs are up 62.1 percent and gas 16.9 percent. That is the case for leaving oil in two lines.
The payback numbers in the guides were written before this fall's prices. One April 2026 guide says conversion cuts heating bills 20 to 40 percent and pays back in 3 to 7 years. One contractor says most owners save $950 or more a year. With oil above $5 a gallon the saving is larger, but nobody knows where oil will be in three years. It fell to around $70 a barrel in July before rising again. Do the math on your own gallons, and do not count on this winter's price lasting.
The heat pump option
If gas is not in your street, the choice is propane or a heat pump. A 2026 rebate guide works a Maine example: $3,600 a year on oil against about $2,125 on a cold climate heat pump, a saving of about $1,475 a year. Income qualified homes can get up to $8,000 under the HEAR rebate program in states where it is open. Many owners keep the oil boiler as backup for the coldest nights, which also skips the tank removal for now.
The line the HVAC quote leaves out
One tank contractor says it plainly: the tank is the line an HVAC quote usually leaves out. Ask every bidder whether tank removal, the chimney liner and the permit are in the number.
Why this costs more in 2026
This job exists because of the oil price. Retail heating oil was $5.40 to $5.90 a gallon on September 21, 2026, and NEADA expects oil heated homes to pay about 31 percent more this winter.
Fuel is the common thread. AAA's national average for diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on September 11, 2026, up from about $3.70 a year earlier (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Every truck roll and every delivery carries that. Materials moved too. Associated Builders and Contractors reported construction input prices up 4.8 percent in a year as of March 2026, the largest annual gain since January 2023, and the Associated General Contractors said diesel jumped 37.8 percent in one month, the largest one month rise since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026). Some suppliers added freight surcharges this year. Ask how long your quote is good for.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Call the gas utility first. Ask if there is a main at your address and what the hookup costs.
- Check the tank is in the quote. Removal is $400 to $3,400 and is often missing.
- Ask how the new unit vents. Liner or sidewall vent, and the price of each.
- Get a furnace or boiler model number. So you can compare efficiency between bids.
- Ask for a heat pump price too. Even if you choose gas, you will know the gap.
Ways to pay less
- Time it with a dying boiler. If the oil unit needs replacing anyway, the extra cost to switch is much smaller.
- Ask the utility about rebates. Gas companies want new customers, and some pay toward the equipment.
- Use up your oil. Schedule the switch for when the tank is nearly empty.
- Insulate first. Attic insulation at $1,700 to $2,500 cuts the size and the cost of any new system.
