What changes your price
- Size. Standard dogs cost the least. Mini and toy dogs cost more.
- Generation. F1B puppies are bred back to a Poodle, which raises the odds of a low shedding coat, and they cost more.
- Color. Tricolor is the most common and cheapest. Merle, phantom and sable cost more.
- Health testing. Breeders who test both parents charge more.
- Where you live. Higher cost states usually mean higher prices.
- What the price includes. Some programs add early training.
Why health testing is worth paying for
Petful says four things explain most price gaps: size, generation, coat color and the breeder. It says a quality breeder checks both parents for hip and elbow problems and heart issues. Wooffy adds that this testing often costs $2,000 to $4,000 before a single puppy is sold, and Stokeshire says its testing can top $4,000 per pairing.
Wooffy warns that a $900 puppy from an unscreened backyard breeder is not a bargain, since the Bernedoodle cross was made to help the short life and heavy shedding of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Stokeshire, which is a breeder, says a $1,200 puppy with no health testing can lead to $10,000 to $15,000 in medical bills, so weigh that as one seller's view.
The Doodle Tribe says F1B puppies usually cost $3,500 to $7,000 because breeders need an extra generation. Petful says F1 puppies, the first cross, are often the cheapest, but their coats and shedding are the least predictable.
