What changes your price
- Your profession. Work where a mistake can cost a client money, like finance or engineering, costs more to cover.
- Limits. Higher limits cover bigger lawsuits and raise the price.
- Revenue and staff. More clients means more chances of a claim.
- Claims history. Past claims raise the price.
E&O only covers claims made while you are insured
Insureon notes that E&O policies are claims made. They only cover claims filed while the policy is active. If you stop the policy, a client who sues later is not covered unless you buy extra time, called tail coverage, for an extra cost.
Some jobs must carry it by law or by contract. Insureon names real estate as one. Check your license rules and your client contracts before you pick a limit.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask if the policy is claims made and what the retroactive date is.
- Ask the per claim and total limits.
- Ask the deductible.
- Ask the price of tail coverage if you ever cancel.
Ways to pay less
- Pick the limits your contracts need, not more.
- Ask about a higher deductible you can afford.
- Get quotes from more than one insurer.
How we got these numbers
Every number on this page comes from an insurer's own page, from what its customers really paid. We use the median when the insurer gives one. The median is the middle price: half of buyers paid less and half paid more. An average can be pulled up by a few very expensive policies, so we show it only as a second number. Where two insurers give a median, the range above runs from the lower one to the higher one. We do not add our own guesses, and this page has no calculator because no insurer publishes how each choice moves the price. All numbers were checked on September 26, 2026.
