    What full coverage means

Full coverage is not a legal term. It usually means liability insurance plus collision and comprehensive. Collision pays to fix your car after a crash. Comprehensive pays for theft, hail, fire and hitting a deer.

If you have a car loan or lease, the lender usually requires full coverage. If your car is old and worth little, liability only may cost far less. Bankrate puts minimum coverage near $68 a month.

    Why the averages differ

Each source builds its average from a different sample driver, car and coverage level. Use them as a range, then compare real quotes for your own car.

    Before you decide

    A worked example

Say full coverage costs you $210 a month and liability only would cost $70. You save $140 a month, or $1,680 a year, by dropping full coverage. If your car is worth $3,000, one year of savings covers more than half of it. For a newer car worth $25,000, keep full coverage.
