What changes your price

What each type of board includes

Stables Systems says pasture board is the most basic tier: your horse lives out with herd mates and gets hay, water and maybe a daily check. Self care board, says InfoHorse, means you rent a stall and feed, muck and manage turnout every day. Full board adds a stall, regular feeding, turnout and daily care, and Stables Systems says it is the tier most boarders end up on.

Guides give different full board numbers. Horse Racing Sense and InfoHorse say $650 to $1,600 or more. Stables Systems says $400 to $900. Board and Stable, which averages barns that post rates, says full board averages $596 in Texas and $633 in Michigan, and the median in California is $500. Those state numbers come from barns that publish a rate, so they may not match every barn near you.

Ask what is included. InfoHorse says hay included can mean two flakes a day, free choice round bales, or no hay when the barn says the pasture is enough, and that add ons can raise the real bill 20 to 40 percent above the base quote. Other horse and animal costs

Board is only one part of horse care. Horse Racing Sense says vet and farrier work, supplements and insurance can add a lot. For urgent vet costs in general, see our emergency vet page.

If you keep horses at home, you will need fencing. See our fence installation and fence permit pages. For a smaller pet, see our sugar glider page.

How we got these numbers

Barns set their own prices. The ranges come from 2026 horse care guides and barn listings, and one late 2025 guide, as dated below. Some sources sell horse gear or list barns, so treat them as asking prices. We do not add our own guesses. All numbers were checked on September 28, 2026.
