What changes your price
- Two wheels or four. Most front wheel and all wheel drive cars need all four wheels checked, which costs more.
- The car. Sport cars, lowered cars and trucks with modified suspension cost more to align.
- Steering angle sensor. Many newer cars need this reset after an alignment, which Mavis puts at $20 to $40.
- Worn parts. If a part is worn, it must be replaced before the car can be aligned, which adds to the bill.
- Coupons. Mavis leans on coupons, so the menu price is often not what a prepared customer pays.
Why the quote can grow
An alignment only works if the steering and suspension parts are in good shape. If the shop finds a worn tie rod or bushing, it will quote that repair first. That is the most common reason a $100 alignment turns into a much bigger bill.
Mavis says to have the alignment checked every 6 months or 6,000 miles, but that you only need an alignment when the car needs it. Signs include a pull to one side, an off center steering wheel and uneven tire wear. It is also smart to check it when you buy new tires.

A front end alignment adjusts only the front wheels. A four wheel alignment adjusts all four. Mavis says front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars need the full alignment, which is why most quotes fall in the $90 to $150 range.
