These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Suburban and community offices often charge 15 to 30 percent less than dense metro practices.
Bonding vs veneers
The dentist paints tooth colored resin onto the tooth, shapes it and hardens it with a light. Pearl notes it usually takes one visit, needs little or no numbing, and removes very little natural tooth. It is good for small chips, small gaps and spots.
The trade off is life span and stains. Bonding lasts about 5 to 7 years and can stain from coffee, tea and red wine. Porcelain veneers last longer and resist stains but cost far more. If your teeth are only dull, whitening first may be all you need, since bonding does not whiten later.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask the per tooth price.
- Ask how long it should last.
- Ask to see their bonding photos.
- Ask the repair price if it chips.
- Whiten first if you plan to.
Ways to pay less
- Bond only the teeth that show.
- Check if insurance pays for injury repairs.
- Compare two dentists.
- Avoid staining drinks to make it last.
