Suburban and community offices often charge 15 to 30 percent less than dense metro practices.
Simple vs surgical, and what comes after
A simple extraction removes a tooth you can see above the gum using forceps. Pearl notes it usually takes 20 to 40 minutes. A surgical extraction means cutting the gum, removing bone or splitting the tooth, and it is billed higher.
Plan the replacement before the tooth comes out. If you want an implant later, a socket graft at the same visit can save a bigger graft later. Other options are a bridge or a partial denture. For impacted back teeth, see wisdom teeth removal.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask simple or surgical.

- Ask which numbing is included.
- Plan the replacement first.
Ways to pay less
- Use a general dentist for simple extractions.
