Burst pipe repair costs $200 to $3,000 in 2026
The average is about $500, in HomeAdvisor's 2026 figures, and nearly 80 percent of that is labor. An emergency call out adds $100 to $300. Replacing a damaged section runs about $150 to $250 per linear foot. Water damage cleanup is a separate bill, and it is often the bigger one.

Cost by size of the repair
| Average repair | About $500, range $200 to $3,000 (HomeAdvisor, 2026). |
|---|---|
| 1 foot of pipe | $150 to $250 (Angi). |
| 2 feet | $300 to $350. |
| 5 feet | $750 to $1,250. |
| 8 feet | $1,200 to $2,000. |
| Emergency call out | $100 to $300 on top. |
| Plumber rate | $45 to $200 an hour (Angi). |
What pushes a quote up
| Where the pipe is | Inside a finished wall, ceiling or slab costs far more than in an open basement. |
|---|---|
| Length of pipe | More damaged pipe means more material and labor. |
| Pipe material | Copper costs more than PEX to replace. |
| After hours | Nights, weekends and holidays add a call out fee. |
| Cause | Freezing, corrosion or a clog. Corroded pipes may need more than one section. |

These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Cold states see more frozen pipe bursts in winter, when emergency plumbers are busiest.
What to do in the first ten minutes
Speed saves money here. Angi's guide gives the order. Shut off the main water supply. Open faucets to drain the lines and relieve pressure. Then take photos of the damage for an insurance claim before you clean up.
The repair itself is often the smaller bill. HomeAdvisor's guide notes that water damage repair is a separate cost, and that dampness, rot and mold spread the longer water sits. If water reached drywall, flooring or insulation, call a water damage company the same day. See our water damage restoration cost page.
Does insurance pay
Many homeowners policies cover sudden bursts, but not damage from a slow leak or neglect. Call your insurer early and keep every receipt, including the plumber's bill.
Why this costs more in 2026
Nearly all of this bill is plumber labor, and emergency rates rose with every other trade rate this year.
The short version is oil. Diesel passed $6 a gallon on the AAA national average for the first time on September 11, 2026. A year earlier it was about $3.70 (CBS 8 reporting AAA). That lands in trip charges, deliveries and anything made from petroleum. In March 2026, construction input prices were up 4.8 percent on the year, the biggest annual gain since January 2023, according to Associated Builders and Contractors, and the Associated General Contractors measured a 37.8 percent one month jump in diesel, the largest since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026). Quotes are being held open for shorter periods this year, so ask for the expiry date in writing.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask for the price per foot and how many feet.
- Ask about the call out fee before they come.
- Ask what caused it. Freezing, corrosion or a clog.
- Ask if other pipes look weak.
- Get an itemized bill for insurance.
Ways to pay less
- Know where your main shutoff is before you need it.
- Insulate pipes in cold spaces before winter.
- Book during business hours if the water is off and it can wait.
- File a claim for sudden bursts with water damage.
