Repiping a house costs $1,500 to $15,000 in 2026
Most homeowners pay about $7,500 to repipe a house, in Angi's data. A single fixture averages about $1,200. The pipe you choose moves the price most: a 2026 plumber's guide puts a whole house PEX repipe at $4,000 to $8,000 and copper at $8,000 to $15,000. About 75 percent of the bill is labor.

Cost by pipe and scope
| Whole house, average | About $7,500. Range $1,500 to $15,000 (Angi). |
|---|---|
| Whole house in PEX | $4,000 to $8,000 (1-800-Plumber, 2026). |
| Whole house in copper | $8,000 to $15,000. |
| One fixture | About $1,200 per fixture, depending on how much pipe it needs. |
| Labor share | About 75 percent of the total. |
What pushes a quote up
| Pipe material | Copper costs far more than PEX in material and in labor. |
|---|---|
| Number of fixtures | Each bathroom, kitchen and laundry adds runs. |
| Stories and access | Slab homes and finished walls take more work than an open crawl space or basement. |
| Wall repair | Drywall patching and paint are often a separate line. |
| Permits | Most cities require a permit and an inspection. |
Repipe a house cost by region
| Lower cost states | $3,200 to $6,400. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia and most rural areas. |
|---|---|
| Average cost states | $4,000 to $8,000. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and most mid size cities. |
| Higher cost states | $5,200 to $10,400. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington, plus big metros such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC. |
These rows are our estimate. We took the typical national range and adjusted it for local labor costs, which run about 20 percent lower in the cheapest states and about 30 percent higher in the dearest ones. Because about three quarters of this job is labor, local plumber rates matter more than the pipe.
PEX or copper, and signs you need a repipe
PEX is plastic tubing that bends around corners and needs fewer fittings, so it goes in faster and costs less. 1-800-Plumber's 2026 guide notes that PEX resists scale and chlorine and runs quietly, but it cannot be used outdoors because sunlight damages it. Copper is the traditional choice. It is naturally antimicrobial and fully recyclable and can last up to 70 years in the right conditions, but its price swings and it takes skilled soldering.
When a repipe makes sense
Angi's guide points to frequent plumbing repairs as a common reason. Other signs are rusty or discolored water, low pressure throughout the house, repeated pinhole leaks, and old galvanized steel or polybutylene pipe. If you are remodeling and moving fixtures, it is often the right time too.
A repipe is a big number, but repeated leak repairs and water damage add up fast. Compare the quote with what you have spent on plumbing repairs in the last two years.
Why this costs more in 2026
Copper is a traded metal and its price moves with markets, and every run of pipe is priced at this year's plumber labor rates.
Fuel is the common thread. AAA's national average for diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time on September 11, 2026, up from about $3.70 a year earlier (CBS 8 reporting AAA). Every truck roll and every delivery carries that. Materials moved too. Associated Builders and Contractors reported construction input prices up 4.8 percent in a year as of March 2026, the largest annual gain since January 2023, and the Associated General Contractors said diesel jumped 37.8 percent in one month, the largest one month rise since 1990 (Roofing Contractor, April 2026). Some suppliers added freight surcharges this year. Ask how long your quote is good for.
How to judge the quote in your hand
- Ask PEX or copper, and why.
- Ask if drywall repair is included.
- Ask how many fixtures the price covers.
- Ask about the permit and inspection.
- Ask how long the water will be off.
Ways to pay less
- Choose PEX where your code allows it.
- Do it during a remodel when walls are open.
- Do your own drywall patching and paint.
- Get three quotes. Labor is most of the bill.
