- The part that broke. Heads are cheap. Pipes, valves and backflow parts cost more.
- Digging. In ground systems cost more when the crew must dig to reach a pipe.
- Your soil. Sandy soil is quick to dig. Hard clay and tree roots slow the job.
- How many parts are bad. Older systems often have several worn parts at once.
- When you call. Emergency and weekend calls cost more per hour.
- Your city. Labor costs more in some areas than others.
Price by part: what each fix involves
A broken sprinkler head is the most common repair. Lawn Love puts it at $59 to $150, and HomeGuide at $130 to $275 per head once labor is added. A good tech also sets the spray pattern and checks the pressure, not just screws on a new head.
Valves control water to each zone. HomeGuide puts a valve swap at $70 to $300, and says it takes 1 to 2 hours. Landscapio says the part may cost $20 while the labor bill still lands near $250.
Pipes are harder. A leaking pipe under the lawn costs $150 to $400 to find and fix. Pipes often break when water freezes in them over winter. The backflow preventer, which stops yard water from flowing back into your drinking water, is the most expensive part to replace, at $450 to $1,700.
LawnStarter says repairs on above ground systems cost the least, at about $80 to $320. In ground systems cost about $100 to $490 once digging is needed. Minor fixes can be as low as $70, while major repairs can reach $850.
