Guides differ a lot. Some are written by breeders, who sell at the high end. What changes your price
- Quality tier. Pet, show and breeding quality kittens are priced differently, says Petful.
- Color and pattern. Petful says rare colors cost more.
- The breeder. Feline Nest says reputation, pedigree papers and health testing all play a role.
- Where you live. Petful says the same kitten can differ by hundreds of dollars between states. Your Pet Planet says a breeder in Los Angeles or New York City charges more than one in rural Arkansas.
- Registration. Petful bases its breeder prices on catteries registered with TICA and the CFA.
- Getting the kitten home. Shipping adds $400 to $800, says Wiseacres Ragdolls.
Why prices are so far apart
RagdollInfo says the numbers are not random, they are tiers. A registered pet quality kitten is $1,000 to $3,000, and show or breeding quality is $3,000 to $5,500 or more. An unregistered seller may list a Ragdoll for $200 to $800, but with no health testing or pedigree papers. A rescue Ragdoll may cost $75 to $300.
Catster says Ragdolls are in high demand, which raises the price, and that Ragdolls rarely reach shelters. It says to ask to visit the cattery and meet the parents. Feline Nest says a price well below $1,500 for a pet quality kitten deserves serious scrutiny.
RagdollInfo adds that a retired breeding adult can cost about the same as an unregistered kitten, but comes with a real health and temperament record. How to judge the price you are quoted
- Ask if the kitten is registered, and with whom.
- Ask for health testing results on the parents.
- Ask what the price includes, like vaccines, spay or neuter, and a health guarantee.
- Ask to visit the cattery, or to video call.
- Ask about shipping and deposit rules.
- Compare with $1,000 to $3,500 for a pet quality kitten.
Ways to pay less
- Adopt. Petful says rescues charge $75 to $600.
- Ask a Ragdoll rescue about retired breeding cats or owner surrenders, says Your Pet Planet.
- Choose pet quality instead of show quality.
- Buy from a breeder near you to skip the $400 to $800 shipping cost.
- Do not chase a very low price, since it can mean no health testing.
How we got these numbers
Breeders and rescues set their own prices. The ranges come from 2026 cat guides and breeder pages, as dated below. Several sources are breeders or sell pet products, so treat them as asking prices. We do not add our own guesses. All numbers were checked on September 28, 2026.
