What changes your price

Why sizing up costs more
The Carat Cut explains that to make a ring smaller, a jeweler cuts out a small piece of the band and joins the ends, so you mostly pay for labor. To make it bigger, the jeweler cuts the band and adds a new piece of matching metal, so you pay for the metal too. It puts sizing down at about $40 to $80 and sizing up at about $80 to $150, and says jewelers charge up to 50 percent more for platinum than they did a year earlier. It warns that eternity bands with stones all the way around usually cannot be resized.
CostInsightHub says white gold and platinum often need new rhodium plating afterward, at about $20 to $45. It says big city jewelers in places like New York and Los Angeles add 15 to 25 percent to labor, and that laser welding, which is safer for rings with small stones, costs 20 to 30 percent more than regular soldering.
Statement Collective notes that rings made of steel or tungsten cannot be resized at all, so a ring adjuster or buying the right size is the only fix. How long ring resizing takes
A simple resize at a local jeweler often takes a few days to a week. Rings with stones, engraving or platinum can take one to two weeks, and rings sent to a central shop can take two to three weeks.
AJLuxe suggests asking three questions before you hand over a ring: is the work done in the shop, are the stones checked and tightened as part of the price, and what happens if something goes wrong. A jeweler who answers all three clearly is one you can trust with an engagement ring or family piece.
Store jewelers and mall chains
FeelStyle Jewelry says many mall jewelers no longer have a jeweler on site and send your ring to a central shop, so you may wait two to three weeks. It says a resize can be free if your ring is covered by a store plan, and that some chain packages for engagement rings start around $179 without one.
