How much does it cost to hire a tax attorney?

Most tax lawyers offer a free first call and quote after they read your IRS letter. Ask for a flat fee when the job is clear, like an offer in compromise or a payment plan. Hourly billing makes sense for court cases where the work is hard to predict.

Contingency fees, where the lawyer takes a share of what they win, are rare in tax work.

Is it worth it?

J. David Tax Law's example: a $5,000 flat fee is worth paying if it wipes out $40,000 of IRS debt. For small debts, an IRS payment plan you set up yourself may cost only the IRS setup fee.

Ways to pay less

Before you decide

Tax attorney, CPA or Enrolled Agent?

For audits, payment plans and offers in compromise, CPAs and Enrolled Agents can also represent you before the IRS, often for less. A tax attorney matters most when there is a chance of criminal charges, a tax court case or a big legal fight, because conversations with a lawyer are protected by attorney client privilege.

Keep every IRS letter and note the deadline on it. Missing a deadline can close cheaper options.
