Paperlust says most brides spend $300 to $800, citing Zola, and that The Knot puts a full hem, bustle and bodice package closer to $700 to $1,000. It suggests budgeting 10 to 20 percent of the gown price for alterations. Bride Atlas agrees on 10 to 20 percent, rising to 30 percent for heavily beaded or complex dresses.
Ira's Bridal Studio, a New Jersey shop, says brides there pay $125 to $225 for a hem, $95 to $250 to take in the sides and $45 to $125 for a bustle, with most gowns landing at $390 to $550 in all. RoseVow says big city shops charge 25 to 40 percent above national averages.
