Your state decides how many hours you need. Cosmetology and Spa Academy says states ask for anywhere from 500 to 1,800 hours. Illinois needs 1,500, which takes about 10 to 12 months full time.
That changes the price a lot. The American Barber Institute says a 500 hour New York program usually costs about $4,000 to $7,000. Its own plans run $3,600 for afternoons, $4,600 for weekends and $5,600 for mornings with a tool kit. At the other end, the Minnesota School of Barbering lists $14,200 for its 1,500 hour program, plus $1,700 for tools.
Community colleges can be cheaper for in state students. Vocational Training HQ gives the example of a three semester Alabama program at about $1,000 a semester. The same guide notes that barber programs may accept Pell Grants, loans and veterans benefits.
