Advance Auto Parts scans your engine codes for free in 2026

Advance Auto Parts does not charge to read a check engine light. Staff plug a reader into the port under your dash and the scan itself takes about a minute. It is free at its roughly 4,790 North American stores, along with battery, starter and alternator testing. Advance is the one big chain with no working services page on its own site, so what is on offer is easier to confirm by phoning your store than by reading the website.

What you get for the fee

Typical feeNothing. Free engine code scanning on most cars fitted with the standard port, which means almost anything from the 1996 model year on. There is no fee to credit, because Advance does not do repairs.
How long it takesAbout a minute once the reader is plugged in. No appointment. The slow part is usually waiting for a staff member to come free at the counter.
Also freeBattery testing, starter and alternator testing, and oil and battery recycling. Battery fitting and wiper blade fitting are free when you buy the part from Advance. Loaner tools are free when you bring them back.
How many storesAbout 4,790 across North America, so there is usually one nearby. Services are the same chain wide rather than set store by store.
No services pageAdvance's own store services page is dead as of October 2026. AutoZone and O'Reilly both publish what their free scan covers and what it does not. Advance does not, so phone the store if the detail matters.
If you need a real diagnosisA shop that tests the part rather than reading the code charges about $131 to $209 for a 2026 check engine diagnosis, using Kelley Blue Book's national figures.

    Why the fee exists

Advance sells parts. The free scan is there to get you into the store and point you at a part on the shelf, so there is nothing to charge for it. That is also why the scan stops at the code. Testing which part actually failed takes a lift, time and equipment, and a parts counter has none of those.

What the free Advance scan covers, and where it stops

A code is not a diagnosis

The car stores a code when a sensor reports a number outside the range the computer expects. That tells you which circuit complained, not which part broke. A cylinder misfire code can be a worn spark plug, a failing coil, a fuel injector, a vacuum leak or something a lot more serious. Buying the first part named on a free printout is a guess. It is often a fair guess on an older car with one code and one symptom, and a poor one on a car showing several codes at once. Treat the free scan as step one, not the answer.

Why Advance is harder to check than the others

AutoZone and O'Reilly both run a public page setting out exactly what their free scan does, which lights it reads and what staff are and are not allowed to do. Advance's equivalent page no longer loads. The free scan is still real and still widely reported, including by local TV consumer segments and by store opening write ups, but the written detail is missing. So you cannot check in advance whether your store will read an ABS light, or whether staff will clear a code. Ring and ask before you drive over. Do not assume what another chain offers applies here.

What the free scan is genuinely good for

It is worth the trip when the light has just appeared, the car drives exactly as normal and you want to know whether this is a loose gas cap or something expensive before you spend anything. You walk out with the codes in hand. You can then research them, or take them to a garage and ask for a price to test them properly. A garage will usually quote that over the phone, and knowing the code first means you are asking a sharper question. There is no obligation to buy a part while you are there.

When to skip the parts store

Do not drive over if the check engine light is flashing, because that usually means a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter. Do not drive at all on a red oil pressure light or a red temperature light. Pull over, switch off and call for help, because a few more miles on either can turn a sensor job into an engine. The same applies to a car that is shaking, losing power, overheating or making a noise it did not make yesterday.

    Common questions

Does Advance Auto Parts check the engine light for free?

Yes. Free engine code scanning on most cars with the standard OBD-II port, which covers almost everything from 1996 on. No appointment needed.

How long does the Advance scan take?

About a minute once the reader is plugged in. Most of your time is spent waiting for a staff member at the counter.

Will Advance tell me which part to buy?

It gives you the codes and what they usually mean. It does not test the part, so the first fix named can be wrong on a car with more than one fault.

Does Advance read ABS or transmission codes?

Advance does not publish this, unlike AutoZone and O'Reilly. Phone your store and ask before you drive over.
