Why the fee exists
The fee pays for a technician's first hour with the factory scan tool. On a truck that often includes a road test, and on a diesel it can include forcing a filter clean and watching the sensors while it runs.
What changes the diagnostic on a Ram
Diesel emission faults
Most check engine lights on a Ram diesel come from the emission system: the diesel exhaust fluid system, the particulate filter and the NOx sensors. These faults can come and go, and testing them properly can mean driving the truck or running a forced regeneration. That is why diesel diagnosis often runs past one hour.
eTorque and the Hemi
Many Ram 1500s since 2019 have eTorque, a small 48 volt hybrid system on the Hemi V8. A fault in that system brings up warnings that look scary but are often a battery or connection issue. The Hemi itself can also develop the well known lifter tick, which takes hands on testing to confirm.
Towing and trailer faults
Trailer brake warnings, lighting faults and wiring problems at the hitch are common on working trucks. These are electrical checks more than engine checks. A shop that does a lot of towing setups can often find them fast, so a dealer is not always the only good choice.
Before you pay
Get the fee in writing before the car goes in. Ask two things: does the fee count toward the repair if you let them fix it, and will they call you before going past the first hour. Ask for the trouble codes and test results on the repair order, so the diagnosis is yours even if you take the car somewhere else.
