O'Reilly reads your engine codes for free in 2026

O'Reilly does not charge to read a check engine light. Its VeriScan service is free during store hours with no appointment, and a member of staff walks out to your car and plugs the reader in for you. The report is printed in the store and emailed to you. VeriScan also reads ABS, transmission and maintenance lights, which most free scans do not. The one thing staff cannot do is turn the check engine light off.

What you get for the fee

Typical feeNothing. VeriScan is free during store opening hours and no appointment is needed, though O'Reilly says wait times vary. There is no fee to credit, because O'Reilly does not do repairs.
Which carsAny 1996 or newer passenger vehicle, because that is when the standard port under the dash became law. Older cars used a different system and cannot be read with the VeriScan tool.
What it readsCheck engine codes, and also ABS, transmission and maintenance lights on many cars. Most free parts store scans stop at the check engine light, so this is the widest free scan on the high street.
They cannot clear the lightO'Reilly says staff are not legally allowed to clear a check engine code with the reader. Where the law allows it, you may use their reader to clear it yourself. Maintenance lights are the exception and staff can reset those.
Also freeBattery testing on or off the car, battery charging, starter and alternator testing, and fluid and battery recycling. Wiper blade and bulb fitting are free when you buy the part in store, and some cars are not eligible if the fitting needs heavy disassembly.
If you need a real diagnosisO'Reilly's own page says a shop usually charges around $100, about an hour of labor, to read codes. Kelley Blue Book puts a full 2026 check engine diagnosis at about $131 to $209.

    Why the fee exists

O'Reilly sells parts, so the scan is a way to get you through the door and point you at a part on the shelf. That is also why the report stops where it does. O'Reilly says plainly that the report reflects what the car's computer reported and does not replace a full mechanical inspection. Finding which part actually failed takes shop time, and a parts store is not a garage.

What the free O'Reilly scan covers, and where it stops

Why staff hooking it up matters

This is the real difference between the big three parts chains in 2026. O'Reilly says a parts professional will follow you out to the car, plug the reader into the port under the dash and bring the result back inside. At AutoZone, by its own staff's account, you are often handed the tool and left to find the port yourself. If you have never plugged one in, or you cannot easily bend under a dashboard, that difference is the whole trip. Call your store first either way, because practice varies store to store at every chain.

    What the report actually contains

O'Reilly runs the codes through a database it says holds more than 650 million verified fixes, and prints a list of likely causes with the parts that usually fix them. You get it on paper in the store and by email. That is more than a bare code, but it is still a list of what the code usually means on cars in general, not a test of your car. The same misfire code can be a spark plug, a coil, an injector or a vacuum leak, and no database can tell the difference from the code alone.

Reading the light is not turning it off

A lot of people go to a parts store hoping the light will be gone when they leave. O'Reilly says its staff are not legally allowed to clear a check engine code. Where local law allows, you can use their reader to clear it yourself, but that only hides the symptom. If the fault is still there the light comes back, often the next time you start the car. Clearing codes before an emissions test is also a bad idea, because the car then reports that its self checks are not finished and the test can be refused.

When not to drive to the store at all

A steady check engine light on a car that drives normally is a sensible free scan trip. Stop and switch off if the red oil pressure light or the red temperature light comes on, because another few miles on either can cost you an engine. A flashing check engine light usually means a misfire bad enough to wreck the catalytic converter. The same goes for a car that is shaking, losing power, overheating or making a new noise. Those need a tow, not a car park scan.
