The GMC Sierra is built alongside the Chevrolet Silverado and shares its engines and electronics. The Yukon shares with the Tahoe. That means any Chevrolet or GMC dealer can diagnose it, so it is worth calling two dealers and comparing their fee.
Check the 6.2 liter V8 recall
In 2025, GM recalled many 2021 to 2024 trucks and SUVs with the 6.2 liter V8 over engine bearing failures. If your GMC has that engine and you hear a knock or feel rough running, check your VIN for open recalls before you pay for a diagnosis. Recall inspections and repairs are free.
Duramax diesel
On a Duramax, most check engine lights come from the emission system: the diesel exhaust fluid system, the particulate filter and the NOx sensors. Testing these can mean a road test or a forced regeneration, which is why diesel diagnosis often runs past one hour.
Before you pay
Get the fee in writing before the car goes in. Ask two things: does the fee count toward the repair if you let them fix it, and will they call you before going past the first hour. Ask for the trouble codes and test results on the repair order, so the diagnosis is yours even if you take the car somewhere else.
