NTB publishes no price for a check engine diagnostic in 2026

NTB is owned by Mavis, and Mavis publishes what it charges for 15 different services. Diagnostics is not one of them. There is no diagnostic price on the NTB pages, none on the coupon pages, and none on the check engine light page, which tells you to call the store instead. The free items NTB advertises are visual inspections, not code scans. So the price is set at your branch, and the only way to learn it is to ring and ask.

How we calculate this

Prices are for the United States in 2026 from published cost guides, checked September 2026. This is an estimate, not a quote.

    Middle $170$130 to $210

What you get for the fee

Typical feeNone published. Mavis runs a page listing what it charges for 15 services, covering batteries, brakes, rotors, alignments, oil changes, struts, inspections and tires. There is no diagnostic or check engine page on it, and no diagnostic price anywhere else on the site.
Who owns NTB nowMavis. It bought 112 NTB locations in 2020 and completed the purchase of the whole NTB and Tire Kingdom retail business from TBC in 2023. NTB's own web pages are served from mavis.com, so the brand is a front end on the Mavis operation.
The NTB name is still being retiredMavis has rebranded NTB stores that sit close to Mavis branded stores, closed about 25 older ones and folded the staff into Mavis. It is still happening: a Flower Mound, Texas, store was approved to change its sign to Mavis in February 2026.
The free items are inspectionsNTB advertises a free visual brake inspection, a free alignment check, a free battery check, a free suspension inspection and a free muffler and exhaust inspection. None of those is a code scan. A free inspection is someone looking at a part, not reading your car's computer.
How many storesMavis's NTB page says over 350 locations, concentrated in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast. Published counts differ depending on which page you read, because stores are still being converted to the Mavis name.
What a real diagnosis is worthKelley Blue Book puts a 2026 check engine diagnosis at about $131 to $209 nationally. Use that as your yardstick when the branch finally quotes you.

    Why the fee exists

NTB is a tire chain first. Tires and oil changes have set prices because the work is the same everywhere, which is why those prices are published. Diagnostic time is labor, it varies by city and by how long the fault takes to find, and the chain will not commit to a national figure for it. Publishing 15 prices and not this one is a choice, not an oversight.

What NTB publishes, and what it leaves out

Fifteen prices published, and not this one

It is worth seeing the gap clearly. Mavis will tell you online what it charges to fit a battery, replace brake pads and rotors, repair a flat, do a front end alignment, change your oil, fit struts, run a state inspection, rotate and balance your tires and replace a TPMS sensor. For a check engine light it has a page explaining what the light means, and where the price should be it tells you to call. That pattern tells you something useful: the jobs with fixed parts and fixed labor get a number, and the job where the clock runs does not. Treat any diagnostic quote as an hourly charge in disguise and ask how long they expect it to take.

NTB and Mavis are now one company

This matters when you are comparing prices. Searching NTB and Mavis separately looks like shopping two chains, but you are looking at one pricing operation with two signs. Mavis has said plainly that NTB staff were integrated into the Mavis organization and that stores close to Mavis branded branches have been rebranded. Mavis also bought Midas from TBC in June 2025. So NTB, Mavis and Midas are the same parent. If one branch quotes you a diagnostic fee you do not like, driving to the other sign down the road is not really a second opinion.

A free inspection is not a free scan

Chains advertise a lot of free things, and the word free does a lot of work in tire shop marketing. Every free item on NTB's coupon pages is a person looking at a part with their eyes: brakes, alignment, battery, suspension, exhaust. A code scan is different. It means plugging a tool into the port under your dash and reading what the car's computer stored. Nobody at NTB advertises that for free. If you want it free, the parts stores do it: AutoZone, O'Reilly and Advance Auto Parts all read check engine codes at no charge.

Call with the code already in your hand

Because the price is set at branch level, your call is the only way to find it, and you will get a better answer if you already know the code. Get it scanned free first, then ring your NTB and ask two things: what do you charge to test this specific code, and does that come off the bill if I have the work done here. NTB publishes nothing about whether the fee is credited, so the answer you get on the phone is the only one you have. Write down the name of whoever tells you.

    Common questions

How much does NTB charge for a diagnostic?

NTB publishes no diagnostic price. Mavis, which owns NTB, lists prices for 15 other services but not this one, and its check engine page tells you to call the store.

Is NTB the same as Mavis?

Effectively yes. Mavis completed its purchase of the NTB business in 2023, NTB's web pages are hosted on mavis.com, and NTB stores are still being rebranded to Mavis into 2026.

Does NTB scan check engine codes for free?

NTB advertises no free scan. Its free offers are visual inspections of brakes, alignment, battery, suspension and exhaust.

Where can I get a free check engine scan instead?

AutoZone, O'Reilly and Advance Auto Parts all read check engine codes free, with no appointment needed.
