Those three words are doing a lot of work. They mean there is no company wide figure to quote you, not that the job is unusually complicated. A steady check engine light on a car that drives normally is routine work at every garage in the country, and most independents will give you a number over the phone. When a chain will not, you have lost your main tool for comparing, so you have to rebuild it yourself. Ring two local independent shops and ask what they charge to diagnose a check engine light. Those two numbers become your yardstick. If Goodyear comes back well above them, you are paying for the convenience of the chain rather than for better testing.

The free car care check will not read your engine light

This catches people out, because a free 29 point check sounds like it must include the computer. It does not. Goodyear describes the free check as covering tires, alignment, brakes and fluids, and when it ran the same check free for veterans it listed exactly those four things. A technician looking at your brake pads cannot see why your engine light is on. If you book the free check hoping to find out what the light means, you will leave knowing no more about it than when you arrived. Get the code free first, then ring with a sharper question

Twenty minutes at a parts counter turns a vague question into a precise one. Instead of asking Goodyear what it costs to find out what is wrong, you can ask what it costs to test a specific code on a specific car. That is a question a service writer can usually answer on the phone, and it makes it far harder for a quote to drift upward once your keys are on the desk.

Three questions before you hand over the keys

Ask what the diagnostic charge is, in dollars, before anyone touches the car. Ask whether it comes off the bill if you have the repair done there, because Goodyear publishes no policy on that and the answer varies. Ask for it on a written estimate. One more thing worth knowing: not every shop with a Goodyear sign is a Goodyear store. Independent garages in the Goodyear Tire and Service Network keep their own name over the door, run their own promotions and set their own prices, so a coupon you found online may only work at the one shop that issued it.
